the creation of argo ship
Contemporary "Argo" , a proud creation of REPPOS BOAT BUILDERS, based upon mythology of the Argonauts (dating from the 13th century BC and before the Trojan War) and historical data, constructed in 2006 in the city of Volos, using absolutely traditional ways and materials.
Argo’s construction began in March 2004 and was completed in September 2006. In 2008, this fabulous boat with 50 rowers and crew sailed around the Greek Seas and reached the island of Corfu, (Greece’s north west edge). In 2009, it carried out a trip to Georgia Republic (cities Batumi and Poti ) in Black Sea, which is geographically the ancient area of Colchis and was the final destination of the ancient Greek hero Jason who took from there the “Golden Fleece”. The originality of Argo is that it is made exclusively using wood and ropes. The parts of the vessel associated with wooden joints with no nails or other metal parts. Both father and son Giannis and Nikos Reppos used their experience, their technical knowledge and under the guidance and inspiration of Admiral Apostolos Kourtis, they created this beauty. The result is that (combined with the perfect design) Argo has very good buoyancy, achieves high speed and is practically unsinkable. Yiannis and son nikos reppos: the men who build argo THE CONTINUITY OF A LEGEND
For decades we established a respectful knowledge about the construction of wooden boats! That armed us with respect, love dedication and research that made us the 'hands' that have built ARGO. This famous ancient ship globally known, has sailed again after 3,500 years.
The initiative for its creation belongs to the Municipality of Volos. The whole project started in 2004 as a vision but also under the auspices of the Naval Archeology Research Program of the 'NAYDOMOS' Institute, with Admiral Kourtis as Admiral and Captain of the ship. Under the scientific guidance of the 'NAYDOMOS' father and son - Yannis and Nikos Reppos - managed to 'bring back to life' the most known ship of the world! ARGO."We listen respectfully "the whispering of the ancient shipbuilders and guessed their technique." Our shipbuilding knowledge in Traditional Shipbuilding begins in 1958. We count almost 60 years in the construction of traditional and modern More than 1500 vessels of all types (traditional and modern, professional and recreational) have been built here, from 3 to 28.5 meters. We had also repaired, hundreds of boats. They did the unbelievable! We build from scratch the most known ancient boat in the history of our planet! The reconstruction took place at Pefkakia, in Volos; the same area where according to the legend, the ancient Argo was constructed in ancient time, by the shipbuilder and former paddle man Nikolaos Reppos |
The quest of the Argonauts is not simply a myth…
Reviving the legend of Argos and JasonThe name Argonauts from Greek mythology brings to mind Jason’s quest with his ship the Argo, which took him from Iolcos (Volos) to Colchis on the Black Sea, in order to take the Golden Fleece. This myth is an allegory for the second big wave of colonization of the Black Sea by the Greeks. This quest took its name from Jason’s ship, the Argo, which was itself named after its builder, Argus.
In 2004 a Mycenaean tomb came to light in the vicinity of Volos, and in this unexpected way a myth, that of the Argonauts, began to be less of a myth. Recently, four samples of gold found in Georgia on the Black Sea were examined in the Louvre and compared with some of the beads found on a necklace in the Mycenaean tomb of Volos. Both had the same local provenance and both items, the Greek and the Georgian, appear to have been made from alluvial gold that came from a river in Colchis. MORE |
ARGO THE HISTORYArgo was constructed by the shipwright Argus, and its crew were specially protected by the goddess Hera. The best source for the myth is the Argonautica by Apollonius Rhodius. According to a variety of sources of the legend, Argo was said to have been planned or constructed with the help of Athena. According to certain sources, Argo was the first ship to sail the seas. It was Athena who taught Tiphys to attach the sails to the mast, as he was the steersman and would need an absolute knowledge of the workings of the ship.[1] According to other legends, she contained in her prow a magical piece of timber from the sacred forest of Dodona, which could speak and render prophecies.
After her successful journey, Argo was consecrated to Poseidon in the Isthmus of Corinth. She was then translated into the sky and turned into the constellation Argo Navis.[2] MORE |

HOMERIC SHIP - ARGO - REPLICA CREATED BY REPPOS
The ship Argo is build after the pattern of the long ship in which Danaus came into Greece and this was the first long ship built by the Greeks.Chiron, who was born in the Golden Age, forms the Constellations for the use of the Argonauts and places the Solstitial and Equinoctial Points in the fifteenth degrees or middies of the Constellations of Cancer,Chalae, Capricorn, and Aries. Meton in the year of Nabonassar 316, observed the Summer Solstice in the eighth degree of Cancer, and therefore the Solstice had then gone back seven degrees. It goes back one degree in about seventy-two years and seven degrees in about 504 years. Count these years back from the year of Nabonassae 316 and they will place the Argonautic expedition about 936 years before Christ
